Clay As Canvas: Illustrated Surfaces with Ellen Duvall

June 8 - June 12, 2026

Event Description

Take your illustrated surfaces to the next level using underglaze! Explore methods for transferring original imagery, tips for composition, and strategically incorporating color theory into your work, dive into application techniques, layering, and blending, learn to select the best brush for each job, determine the pros and cons to painting on greenware vs bisqueware, and discuss different finishing options. Together we’ll discuss all of this and more to build your confidence with underglaze.

Ellen Duvall: An avid gardener, flora and fauna serve as the main source of inspiration for Ellen’s explorations in surface design. Beneath a layer of vibrant color, her illustrated functional ware weaves in personal narrative, finding parallels between the natural world and the human experience. Ellen holds a BFA in Studio Art from the University of TX. Following a 17-year career as an art educator in public schools, she now works as a full-time ceramic artist in her home studio located in Austin, Texas.
