Hand-Built CLAY PLATES: Building with Soft Clay Slabs
In this project where we show you how to build a clay plate using ONE soft slab of clay that has lots of texture!
This project covers a variety of the 3-D Elements and Principles of Design including Texture, Contrast/Variety, and Proportion/Scale.
The final glazed piece on the YouTube thumbnail is glazed with TPL-63 Citrine and TPL-66 Fire Opal and fired to cone 05!
Supplies
- AMACO No. 25 White Art Clay (slab)
- Texture Tools
- Paper Plates (x2)
- Fettling Knife
- Plastic Wrap
- AMACO Teacher's Palette Light Glazes
How to Build Clay Plates
- Roll out a slab of moist clay.
- Create texture on the surface using texture rollers or other texture tools.
- Lay a paper plate on your slab. Cut the slab slightly larger than the paper plate.
- Cover with plastic wrap and smooth the edges.
- Center clay over the paper plate.
- Press down with a second paper plate.
- Let the slab dry in the paper plate.
