Hand-Built SQUARE TRAYS: Building with Soft Clay Slabs

Need an easy and quick project for the Art Classroom?

Try out this project where we show you how to build a square tray using ONE soft slab of clay! This project covers a variety of the 3-D Elements and Principles of Design including Texture, Contrast/Variety, and Proportion/Scale.

The final glazed piece on the YouTube thumbnail is glazed with TPL-44 Peridot over TPL-23 Aquamarine and fired to cone 05!

Supplies List

How to Build Square Trays

  1. Smooth and stamp a moist slab
  2. Trim excess clay
  3. Lay plastic wrap on the edges of the slab, and smooth
  4. Score and attach the corners
  5. Straighten the sides as needed
  6. Clean up with a wet paintbrush
