Artist Spotlight: Brian Chen

About Brian
I grew up in New Jersey but did not get into ceramics until my freshman year of college in Colorado. My tennis teammate brought me to the ceramics studio and since then I've been hooked.
AMACO: What inspires your work or keeps you excited in the studio?
Brian: My biggest inspiration is gross anatomy and kinesiology. 'Gross' meaning what you can see with your eye. The relationships between forms conveying movement, behavior, and relationships between an organism and its environment is the headspace I like to live in.
AMACO: What is your favorite AMACO product and why?
Brian: Any of the velvet underglazes. My current favorites are V-317 Coral, V-329 Sea Glass, V-361 Jet Black, and V-390 Bright Orange.
AMACO: Any advice you'd give to someone just starting out with clay?
Brian: Keep learning more skills and techniques until you pick out the processes that speak to you best and lean into it. Keep chasing questions and pay attention to the peers/mentors that understand your practice and keep them close.
