Dipping & Layering Glazes: Tips & Tricks for Success!

The Dipping & Layering glaze family bring the beauty of Amaco glazes and the speed of dip application together for you! Whether you’re a production potter, a pottery instructor, or run a community studio, our Dipping and Layering glazes will be popular additions to your glaze lineup.

Here are my best tips for successful results when using the Dipping & Layering glazes:

DL Tip #1: Use Liquid Latex for Glaze-On-Glaze Designs

If you're creating glaze-on-glaze resist decoration, choose AMACO® Liquid Latex instead of wax resist. While AMACO® Liquid Wax Resist works beautifully to keep glaze off the foot, it can lift the base glaze when applied over DL glazes. Latex provides a cleaner separation without disturbing the underlayer. Latex must be removed completely before firing.

DL Tip #2 Test for the Perfect Dip Thickness

Consistent glaze thickness is key. Aim for a glaze layer no thicker than a dime. Test dip times (1–4 seconds) to see what gives you the best results. Once dry, use a needle tool to gently check the thickness. And always fire test tiles on a cookie or drip tray to catch any surprises—especially when layering!

DL Tip #3: Prioritize Thorough Mixing

Well-mixed glaze means even results. After adding water to your dry glaze, let it slake overnight to fully hydrate. Then mix thoroughly, let it sit another 24 hours, and mix again before sieving with a 60-80 mesh screen. Each time you glaze, give it a good stir—or better yet, use a drill with a mixer attachment for best results. Bonus tip: If it’s been awhile since the glaze has been used ensure consistency by sieving the glaze again.

DL Tip #4: Adjust Application with Dip Time, Not Water

Want a thinner application? Try a quicker dip instead of adding more water. Adding too much water can lead to issues like hard-panning (where glaze settles into a solid mass) or peeling before firing. For reliable consistency, test your glaze’s specific gravity using a scale and small container. It's an easy way to keep your glaze in the sweet spot.
