Favorite Winter Layering Combinations

It’s time for us to bring you a sack full of beautiful glaze combos! Whether you’re looking for inspiration to glaze your cozy mugs or holiday decor, we have ideas for you!

One of my favorites for a long time is PC-46 Lustrous Jade over PC-59 Deep Firebrick. This festive holiday combination is a more subtle take on the traditional bright red and green colors. Glaze all over with 2-3 coats of Deep Firebrick, and use Lustrous Jade as an accent or stripe to add a pop of color. This cup is 2 coats of Deep Firebrick with 2 coats of Lustrous Jade applied around the rim. It was fired to cone 6, on A-Mix White Stoneware.

Let it snow! We love the way these two Celadons interact, creating a snowy effect! For this cup, we applied star-shaped stickers, then applied 2 coats of C-27 Storm, a deep blue glaze with a hint of green. When the glaze was dry, we removed the stickers and covered the cup with 2 coats of C-10 Snow. Snow creates this oil-spot effect over some glazes, like Storm and Rainforest, from the Celadon series, and Ancient Copper and Deep Firebrick from the Potter’s Choice family. This cup was fired to cone 5 on A-Mix White Stoneware.

For a more earthy and mysterious vibe, we love PC-53 Ancient Jasper over PC-21 Arctic Blue. This cup is 2 coats of Arctic Blue all over followed by 2 coats of Ancient Jasper on the upper half of the cup. The way Ancient Jasper flows over Arctic Blue evokes cold winter sky and bare tree bark. Fired to cone 6 on A-Mix White Stoneware.

Want a combo that reminds you of evergreen branches? Two coats of PC-48 Art Deco Green over PC-45 Dark Green gives that feathery pine needle vibe. Very glossy and a little runny, but so pretty! This cup was fired to cone 6 on A-Mix White Stoneware.

Sometimes you get stunning results from unlikely places. We were blown away by this combination. We started with 2 coats of Honey Flux PC-17 all over, then applied 2 coats of PC-61 Textured Amber in a narrow stripe. The cup was fired to cone 6 on A-Mix White Stoneware. The colors these two glazes create remind me of a foamy caramel latte. Be careful when applying these, as the Textured Amber layered over Honey Flux can run.

Lastly, for decorative pieces like this little candleholder, we love the look of PC-25 Textured Turquoise applied in a single stripe over 2 generous coats of PC-9 Vintage Gold. It creates runny drips of iridescent pale green on the reflective gold surface. Best firing tips for Vintage Gold: fire to cone 5 with a 15-20 minute hold to create a very slow cone 6, and glaze only the outside of pieces.
