Hidden Gems: Dipping & Layering Glazes
The Dipping & Layering glazes are a great way to speed up your pottery production whether you’re in a classroom or your personal studio, but I have some extra secrets and my favorite combos for you.
The DL series glazes were inspired by the most popular Potter’s Choice and Celadon glazes, so though the formulations vary from the originals you can find an equivalent glaze to some of your faves.

Here are some of my favorite DL glaze combinations:
Stormy Oil Spot
DL-12 Enamel White over DL-27 Storm Cloud; Cone 6, no hold.
This combination creates a dramatic mottled effect, like caps on a rough ocean or reflections on a pond. Make sure to stay light with the Storm Cloud as it can pinhole if it’s too thick.
Morning Fog
DL-33 Low Tide over DL-11 Enamel White; Cone 6, no hold.
This combo is more subtle and patient than some of the other combos listed, but it reminds me of misty mornings and
evenings in the countryside. Low Tide is also spectacular as a base with PC-31 Oatmeal brushed over.
Surfer Blue
DL-25 Coastline over DL-20 Floating Blue; Cone 6, no hold.
Just look at those spots and drips! Like a waterfall of color, this combo has so much movement, and it’s just an entrancing blue!
Enchanted Lake
DL-70 Copper Red over DL-42 River Moss; Cone 6, no hold.
I know what you’re thinking: that can’t be right! Copper Red and River Moss interact in such an unusual way it’s hard to believe it’s real. To me this looks like a bit of magic on a cup.
Secret Garden
DL-59 Brick Red over DL-42 River Moss; Cone 6, no hold.
A combo with high drama, Brick Red and River Moss combine red and green in a way that’s more moody than holiday themed.
Night Magic
DL-60 Honeycomb over DL-1 Ebony; Cone 6, no hold.
This combination surprised me with its visual texture and contrast. I love how Honeycomb flows and changes color into greens and taupe over Ebony.
