Ways to Layer AMACO Crawls Glazes for Dramatic Ceramic Surface Effects
The Amaco Crawls glazes are a route to fascinating textures and effects. We've had so much fun exploring the possibilities and wanted to share some of our favorites with you!
Unexpected layering combinations
Dragon Scales: this glaze combo looks sparkly and dark, like the scales of a glittery dragon. Perfect for pieces that need that vibe. 2 coats of CR-1 Black layered over 2 coats of PC-63 Cosmic Tea Dust.

Snow Fire: Speckled White Crawl floats on the colors of Fire and Ice, making this combination very striking. 2 coats of CR-12 Speckled White layered over 2 coats of PC-72 Fire and Ice

Cosmic Forest: We weren’t expecting this combination to create so much color and visual texture! I love how you get speckles, sparkles, and color variations in this combo. 2 coats of CR-18 Speckled Flux Crawl over PC-66 Cosmic Oil Spot.

Turquoise Jewelry: The bright color of Speckled teal with the shimmery look of Ancient Copper reminds us of jewelry! 2 coats of PC-22 Speckled Teal Crawl over 2 coats of PC-56 Ancient Copper.

Chili Pepper: This combo is hot! Be careful, Aventurine is runny! 2 coats of CR-58 Red layered over 2 coats of PC-64 Aventurine.

Sunflower Summer: Like a field of wildflowers, this combo is enchanting! We applied 2 coats of CR-61 Speckled Yellow of PC-22 Blue Stone.

Wait, there’s more! Try these unusual ways of using Amaco Crawls:
Pop Rocks

Have some chips of Crawls? We had some chips left when we scraped off a tile that had been mis-glazed and didn’t want to toss them out. You can use dried bits from the jar or create the chips by glazing a paper towel or scrap tile and removing the glaze once it’s dried. Sort chips into smaller sizes with a coarse mesh strainer.
1. Apply 2 coats of Celadon (or your choice) glaze to ware.
2. While 2nd coat dries, spread out your dry CR chips on a clean surface or paper towel.
3. Apply 3rd coat of base glaze and while glaze is still wet roll the piece in chips, or sprinkle chips on wet glaze, so the chips stick to the base glaze.

4. Fire to cone 5 or cone 6

If you can refire your piece, this technique creates a unique effect.
- Apply 2-3 coats of your chosen CR glaze on a bisque pot (you can apply a coat of Gum Solution immediately before applying the CR if you’re concerned about the glaze falling off).
- Fire to cone 5 or 6. Shown is our mug with CR-51 Speckled Pink fired on.

- Apply 3 coats of a contrasting glaze, like a Celadon or Satin Matte. We used SM-24 Seafoam
- While the glaze is still damp, gently wipe back from the bumps of the fired CR glaze.

- Refire to cone 5 or 6.
