Artist Workshop: Hinges & High-Temperature Wire: Whimsical Slab-Built Boxes with Juliann Roush
December 5-6, 2026
Event Description
Create a one-of-a-kind ceramic keepsake while exploring inventive surface design techniques in this immersive two-day workshop with Michigan ceramic artist Juliann Roush.
Known for her joyful, highly textured work and vibrant use of color, Juliann will guide participants through the process of building a charming hinged puffy box that can be displayed as wall art or treasured as a functional keepsake. Along the way, you'll discover unique techniques that add personality, movement, and intricate detail to handbuilt ceramics.
Throughout the weekend, Juliann will demonstrate how she creates her signature aluminum wire stamps to produce playful textures and repeating patterns. Participants will design and make their own custom stamps before using them to decorate clay slabs that become the foundation of their project.
You'll also explore one of Juliann's signature techniques—incorporating high-temperature wire into ceramic work. Learn how this specialized material can be used as both a structural and decorative design element, opening up exciting possibilities for future projects.
In addition to construction techniques, Juliann will share her colorful glazing process using AMACO Satin Matte glazes applied with squeeze bottles. You'll learn how these versatile glazes can be layered and mixed to create a custom color palette, then practice your glazing skills on a textured sample tile to take home.
By the end of the workshop, you'll leave with a beautifully detailed hinged ceramic box, new surface decoration techniques, and plenty of inspiration to bring more texture, color, and creativity into your own ceramic work.
