Event Description

Join artist Milo Berezin for a two-day workshop exploring layered, painted, and carved narrative illustration on hand-built pottery! Students will learn how to use slabs in combination with easily found or handmade press-molds to build cups and altered forms. Once our forms are built, we’ll dive into surface decoration, layering underglaze and translucent slip to create colorful, dynamic patterns and illustrations. We’ll explore ways to generate ideas, build a versatile image library, and transfer drawings onto greenware for carving. Finally, we’ll learn how to make inexpensive, easily customizable sgraffito tools that can produce an endless variety of expressive lines, textures, and handwritten text. This workshop is best suited for students with some prior clay experience. We will be working with midrange red stoneware, but the techniques demonstrated can be adapted to various clay bodies and firing temperatures.
