Matisse Underglaze Applique
Using Matisse as our inspiration, we will cut sheets of underglaze newsprint to applique colorful designs on a slab of clay. Video demonstrations include application of underglaze to newsprint sheets, and the cutting and designing of applique composition. Tips include how to successfully transfer images to clay slabs & form a finished piece.
Supplies List
- 3-4 Velvet Underglazes
- AMACO LG-10 Clear Transparent Glaze
- Casting Slip
- AMACO No. 25 White Art Clay
- Newsprint
- Firm Paper Plates
- Plastic Wrap
- Fettling Knife
- Needle Tool or Skewer
- Scissors
- Scraper or Plastic Card
- Fan Brush or Hake Brush
- Wooden Roller or Brayer
Step 1
Paint 3-4 pieces of newsprint with one coat of AMACO Velvet Underglaze.
Step 2
After the newsprint is dry, cut it into shapes to create a design.
Step 3
Smooth the surface of a moist slab and check to see if it is large enough for your project. Apply Casting Slip to the underglazed newsprint.
Step 4
When the casting slip is leather hard and the surface is no longer shiny, it is ready to transfer. Because you are using casting slip, this will only take a few minutes. Place the paper slip side down. Once the pieces are in place, they cannot be moved.
Step 5
Use a wooden roller or brayer to roll over paper and clay slab. Remove the paper immediately.
Step 6
Prepare the next set of shapes to transfer. The shapes can be placed on the bare clay or the previous colors. Cover the slab with plastic wrap to protect the design, then apply a roller to the surface to attach the parts.
Step 7
Remove the paper and repeat the process with the next set of shapes.
Step 8
Cut the slab slightly larger than the paper plate. Cover the slab with plastic to protect the surface.
Step 9
Use a second paper plate and press the slab into the plate form.
Step 10
When clay is completely dry, it is ready to bisque fire slowly to cone 04. Glaze using 2 coats of AMACO LG-10 Clear Transparent glaze or with Teacher's Palette Light glazes!
