Valentine Bud Vases ft. Velvet Underglazes
Valentine's Day is just around the corner and a handmade gift is always the way to go! Follow along as we take you through, step by step on how to throw little bud vases on the pottery wheel and then decorating them with Velvet Underglaze using the Sgraffito technique. These vases are the perfect gift for a special someone or special friend!
Supplies
- brent Pottery Wheel
- AMACO No. 67 Sedona Red Clay
- Throwing Tools
- Ribs
- Wire Tool
- AMACO Fan Brush
- AMACO Velvet Underglaze
- Sgraffito Tools
- Sponge
- LG-10 Clear Transparent Glaze
Create a Bud Vase
- Throw off the hump - Center a section of clay
- Use your pointer or middle finger to open the centered clay
- Gently squeeze and pull the walls up
- Gently push out from the inside to create a curve
- Gently squeeze the clay in at the top to form the neck
- Use a wooden rib to create a foot
- Use a rubber or metal rib to the the outside of the pot
- Use a wire tool to remove the vase from the hump
- Dry to leather-hard
- Apply 2-3 event coats of Velvet Underglaze
- Using a sgraffito tool, carefully carve your design around the vase
- Scratch away the underglaze around the fully drawn design to reveal the contrasting color of the clay
- Allow the vase to dry completely, then bisque fire to cone 04
- Use a damp sponge to wipe away any dust
- Apply 2-3 coats of LG-10 Clear Transparent
- Fire to cone 05
