Artist Spotlight: Juliann Roush

About Juliann

"I grew up in Michigan and attended college in both Japan in a work/study program and at Eastern Michigan University where I obtained a business degree with an emphasis on International Marketing. My senior year of college I failed Statistics which caused me to take an additional semester, but with only one class left to take I had a little time on my hands. To fill that time, I decided to take a pottery class and that literally changed the trajectory of my life. I have been obsessed with clay ever since."

Q: What inspires your work or keeps you excited in the studio?

A: "I’ve been a full-time potter now since 2019, but prior to that, I had owned both a paint-it-yourself pottery studio and a community clay studio with an art gallery, so I’ve had my hands in clay for a long time. But now that I’m working in my own studio, I absolutely LOVE my job. I love the act of creating something new, clay certainly keeps you on your toes but it is also so incredibly versatile, and if you don’t like it, you can squish it and start over."

Q: What is your favorite AMACO product and why?

A: "I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Amaco Satin Matte Glazes, let me count the ways…

1. Amaco Satin Matte glazes are so soft to the touch with a buttery satin finish.

2. Amaco Satin Matte glazes are super stable, they allow me to get nice crisp clean lines, and they don’t move at all!

3. Amaco Satin Matte glazes are mixable!!! I don’t have the space to make my own glazes, but what is so fantastic about these glazes is that I can make my own unique color palette; the possibilities are endless!

4. Amaco Satin Matte glazes are super opaque, I’m able to get great coverage."

Q: Any advice you'd give to someone just starting out with clay?

A:
"Don’t get discouraged, pottery looks easy, but it can take years to hone your skills. Don’t make your pieces so precious that you feel the need to keep everything in the beginning; those clunkers don’t need to be around forever!"
