Supplies List:
- ClayCrete Papier Mache
- Plastic, resealable zipper bags
- Water
- Wire
- Aluminum Foil
- Masking Tape
- Wax Paper
- Mixed-Media Brush or Popsicle Stick
- Optional: Rubber-nibbed Tools
Mess-Free Mixing:
Use plastic, resealable zipper bags to mix Claycrete without the mess. Add a handful of Claycrete and a small amount of water to the bag, then massage it until mixed. Test the mixture; it should hold its shape when squeezed, but not drip water.
Using Armatures:
Start with a sturdy wire or aluminum foil armature as the base for your sculpture. Then, wrap the armature with masking tape or a layer of papier-mache, as Claycrete adheres much better to these surfaces than bare wire.
Apply Thin Layers:
Work in tortilla-thin coats, letting each layer dry completely before applying the next. Thin, even layers help prevent cracking and ensure strong adhesion.
Flatten with Wax Paper:
Place a sheet of wax paper over your Claycrete and flatten it until thin. Lay the sheet on your form, press gently to shape, and slowly peel the wax paper away.
Smooth While Wet:
To reduce sanding later, smooth the Claycrete while it’s still wet. A popsicle stick or damp mixed-media brush works great for refining surfaces before they dry.
Create Textures and Details:
Use rubber-nibbed tools to press and shape fresh Claycrete into textures or fine details.
