Artist Spotlight: Hotaling Ceramics

Hotaling Ceramics LLC is a husband and wife team, Scott and Elizabeth Hotaling. Scott took ceramics in high school and college. He graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in K-12 Art Education. After graduation he worked as a high school ceramics teacher for 8 years. I took ceramic classes in high school and college. It quickly became a passion that stuck after school ended. For over 30 years between the two of us, pottery has mostly been just an expensive hobby. During covid quarantine we decided to take the time with setting up our basement into a studio so we could get serious about turning our hobby into a business.

Q: What inspires your work or keeps you excited in the studio?

A: "Scott is just a very creative person. Our styles are honestly very different. When I met him he made a lot of organic sculptures, masks and hanging planters (he’s a plant guy)! I mostly enjoy making things I can use. Functional items like mugs and other kitchenware. We are both inspired by creation and nature. The amazing thing about ceramics is there is really no limit to the craft when it comes to making and experimenting."

Q: What is your favorite AMACO product and why?
A:
"We probably have half the PC line of glazes. Iron Lustre and Texture Turquoise would definitely be two favorites as they are staples of many combinations we have done over the years. Love the VUG line [Velvet Underglazes]. We also have many Celadons and Phase Glazes.

We all know there are a lot of variables in play when making pottery. One of our favorite things about Amaco glaze is the reliability of results. It’s very rare we open the kiln to find a surprise. Consistency is truly key and worth the price."

Q: Any advice you'd give to someone just starting out with clay?

A: "Have fun with it and don’t get too attached to anything you make. Especially at the beginning. Trial and error is a big part of pottery. Especially when learning. I still feel like I get better every time I throw, every time I handle a mug. Repetition truly works wonders!"
