About Michelle

I’m an artist and educator who works primarily with clay. I’m currently based in California, where I recently completed a year-long residency at the American Museum of Ceramic Arts (AMOCA). Now, I teach ceramics at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, while continuing to develop my own studio practice.

MICHELLE'S PORTFOLIO

AMACO: What inspires your work or keeps you excited in the studio?

Michelle: I’m inspired by the human form and often create self-portraits that reflect on my experiences growing up in the Dominican Republic and later immigrating to the United States. My work draws deeply from Dominican culture—both in concept and in aesthetic. I find inspiration in the vibrancy of Dominican Carnaval, the tropical landscapes of the island, and the personal experiences of daily life as an immigrant.

AMACO: What is your favorite AMACO product and why?

Michelle: I love AMACO’s velvet underglazes because I can achieve very vibrant surfaces. My favorites are V-308 Yellow Underglaze and the V-388 Radiant Red Underglaze.

AMACO: Any advice you'd give to someone just starting out with clay?

Michelle: Be curious! Learn from as many people as you can. One of the beautiful things about clay is that while there are established techniques and rules, every artist has their own way of approaching them. There are often many paths to the same result, so experiment and practice different methods until you discover what feels right for you.
